Celebrating projects that beautify, enhance, sustain and transform Chula Vista!
The Ribbons & Shovels awards celebrated the best in art, architecture, landscape, historic preservation, environment, and more. The City of Chula Vista received nominations that recognized individuals, organizations or businesses that have improved the appearance and appeal of the community by investing in their neighborhoods and businesses. Nominations were accepted for projects that have been completed between 2013 and 2017 and twelve winners were selected.

Project criteria
- All nominees are located in the City of Chula Vista
- All nominees were completed within (January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017)
- All nominees Beautify, Enhance, Sustain or Transform a site, neighborhood, or community or contribute to the economic vitality of Chula Vista
Award Categories
New residential construction project - 2018 winner: Lofts on Landis
Award recognizes architecture and design excellence in a residential development of single-family homes, apartments or condominium project. Submissions accepted for urban infill and new construction.
New non-residential construction project: 2018 winner - Residence Inn by Marriott
Award recognizes architecture and design excellence in commercial, industrial, or retail projects that contribute to the economic vitality of Chula Vista.
Commercial renovation project - 2018 winner: San Ysidro Health Chula Vista
Award will recognize residential or commercial renovation or restoration that demonstrates creative architecture and design that is complimentary of its surroundings, the design creates solutions for its client needs, supports how people interact with and inhabit the space, and enhances the Chula Vista community through property revitalization. Applicant must indicate pre-existing conditions via plans and/or photos.
Public or private landscaping project - 2018 winner: Chula Vista High School Garden
Award recognizes quality and sustainable landscape projects that promote use of native or drought tolerant plants, creative design of hardscape and softscape, as well as sustainable materials and workmanship.
Improvements in the public realm - 2018 winner: Third Avenue Streetscape Phase II
Award recognizes streetscape improvements, such as a new plaza, seating area or median landscaping in a publicly accessible area, or provides improved walkability or public access. Applicant must indicate pre-existing conditions via plans and/or photos.
Art visible to the public - 2018 winner: Smart City Mural at Civic Center Library
Award recognizes creativity and innovation including details that contribute to overall building design. Eligibility includes but is not limited to art installations and designs for such details as hardware, stairways or railings; graphics; lighting or fixtures.
Historic preservation project - 2018 winner: Chula Vista Heritage Museum
Award recognizes improvements to historic resources including historically appropriate restoration, renovations, alterations and additions, that enable historic use or adaptive reuse, while preserving features that convey a site or structure’s historical, cultural or architectural values. Applicant must indicate pre-existing conditions via plans and/or photos.
Affordable housing - 2018 winner: Duetta and Volta at Millenia
Award recognizes exemplary development that demonstrates creativity in expanding affordable housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents while showcasing design excellence.
Green building design - 2018 winner: Wellness & Aquatic Center at Southwestern College
Award recognizes a project that promotes green, sustainable design and construction. Submissions for new construction or renovations accepted. If submitting a renovation, applicant must indicate pre-existing conditions via plans and/or photos.
Residential renovation project - 2018 winners: Christmas in October and the Erb Residence
Award will recognize residential or commercial renovation or restoration that demonstrates creative architecture and design that is complimentary of its surroundings, the design creates solutions for its client needs, supports how people interact with and inhabit the space, and enhances the Chula Vista community through property revitalization. Applicant must indicate pre-existing conditions via plans and/or photos.
Mayor’s Award - 2018 winner: Del Oro on Broadway
The Mayor will select the recipient of this award that recognizes a property owner/investor who has made extraordinary exterior improvements to his or her property.
