Learn how to safely respond to manmade hazards and natural disasters, help organize basic disaster response, and promote preparedness. The Chula Vista Fire Department is once again accepting application for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in disaster response and recovery.
The course includes disaster preparedness and response, fire chemistry, hazardous materials, fire hazards and fire suppression strategies, hands-on use of fire extinguishers, diagnosing and treating airway obstruction, bleeding and shock, applying simple triage and rapid treatment techniques. Evaluating patients and conducting head to toe assessment, establishing a medical treatment area and performing basic first aid. Light search and rescue operations including planning, size-up, search techniques, rescue techniques and rescuer safety.
