We cordially invite you to the City of Chula Vista Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony, a day that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. This flag-raising honors the resilience, contributions, and enduring spirit of the African American community. The ceremony will include inspiring speeches from community leaders, musical performances and a symbolic flag raising.

About Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony: For 3 years, the City has proudly displayed the Juneteenth flag at the Civic Center campus. This tradition honors the historical significance of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the freedom of all enslaved people. The Juneteenth flag was designed by Ben Haith in 1997. The star at the center represents Texas, the Lone Star State, where the last enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom. The bursting outline around the star is meant to symbolize a new beginning for African Americans throughout the nation. The arc represents a new horizon, and the colors red, white, and blue echo the American flag, signifying that enslaved people and their descendants were and are Americans.

We look forward to your presence at this meaningful event.
