THE POSITION: The Chula Vista Fire Explorers were developed in 1989, and are sponsored by Learning For Life. The goal of this program is to introduce young men and women to the activities related to the fire service. This training develops character, responsibility, and teamwork in the participant.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervision Fire Explorers respond to fires, medical aids and other emergency alarms; connect and lay hose lines; assist in operating nozzles; direct water streams and other extinguishing agents onto fires; carry and set up ladders; ventilates buildings; covers and protects exposures; performs salvage and overhaul operations; washes; polishes; services and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; fire inspections of residential and commercial structures; maintain fire stations; attend practice sessions and classes; study firefighting resources; study city geography.
AGE: Minimum 16 years of age at time of hire date. Maximum: 21 years of age.
CERTIFICATIONS: After obtaining a first aid card, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation card, and successful completion of their six-month exam; Fire Explorers may participate in a ride-along program.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES: Fire Explorers must have the ability to follow orders and directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public; ability to learn firefighting techniques, policies, practices and operations; knowledge of safe working practices and procedures; physical condition appropriate to perform the duties of this job classification.
