Description and Essential Functions

Under direct supervision and in a learning capacity, Fire Recruits attend the department's Fire Recruit Academy and receive training on emergency medical services, rescue, hazardous materials, operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment, station maintenance, technical rescue, driver training and the various phases of fire prevention and suppression; learn the policies and functions of Chula Vista Fire Department; and perform related duties as required.

This is a trainee-level, non-sworn, 40-hour workweek classification in the Fire series, with no safety officer powers or safety benefits. Incumbency in this class is limited to a fixed term during which the incumbent must graduate from the five-month Fire Recruit Academy and be eligible for promotion to the class of Firefighter or Firefighter/Paramedic. Graduation from the Academy requires an acceptable level of competency in all academy subjects. Competency shall be demonstrated by passing all examinations, including evaluations of manipulative skills.

Testing Requirements

To be considered for Fire Recruit, you must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List.

The next written test in San Diego County is scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Vista Civic Center, Morris B. Vance Community Room, located at 200 Civic Center Dr, Vista, CA 92084.  The next CPAT test in San Diego County is scheduled for Friday, September 30, 2022 at FCTC San Diego (Miramar College). You must register with the FCTC in order to take the written test and CPAT.  Furthermore, after taking the written test and CPAT, you must register and complete your profile on the FCTC website to be placed on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List.

Description and Essential Functions: Functions include, but are not limited to, the following: perform first aid and lifesaving duties; render emergency medical aid examining and assessing victims, treat and transport patients in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services protocol and department policy; perform primary and secondary medical physical assessments of patients; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation; maintain an effective airway for patients with compromised breathing; administer advanced life support drug therapy within established guidelines and/or at the specific instruction of base hospital medical personnel; operate heart monitoring and defibrillation equipment; operate radios, telephones and other communications equipment in order communicate medical information to base hospital medical personnel or other fire personnel.
