Criminal Investigations
Crimes of Violence (COV)

The Chula Vista Police Department Crimes of Violence Unit investigates many different types of crime including homicide, kidnapping, robbery, assault, criminal threats, gang crimes, death investigations and missing persons.
Family Protection Unit (FPU)

The Family Protection Unit investigates domestic violence, sexual assaults, crimes against children, physical elder abuse, sex offender registrants, and reports of suspected child abuse from Child Protective Services and reports of suspected elder abuse from Adult Protective Services.

The Property Crimes Unit investigates all property related crimes including commercial burglary, residential burglary, motor vehicle theft, fraud, forgery, arson, computer and Internet related theft or fraud.

The Special Investigations Unit gathers, analyzes and disseminates proactive criminal intelligence information to support internal and external law enforcement efforts within the community. SIU also conducts sensitive investigations in the areas of intelligence, narcotics, vice, police-regulated businesses, and public corruption. SIU is responsible for maintaining liaison with the local, state and federal law enforcement intelligence representatives.
SIU is responsible for processing; reviewing and inspecting all police regulated businesses including:

- Holistic Health Practitioners
- Massage Technicians
- Solicitors or Transient Merchants
- Vending Vehicle Inspections
- Non-Profit Organizations
- Alcohol Beverage Control Applications
- Cardrooms
Narcotic Enforcement Team (NET)

The Narcotic Enforcement Team investigates crimes related to street level and mid-level narcotics dealers in Chula Vista and surrounding areas. NET also evaluates and investigates citizen complaints of narcotic activities and assists outside agencies with narcotic investigations with a nexus to Chula Vista.
Forensic Services (Crime Lab)

Forensic Services consists of two sections: The Crime Scene section and the Latent Print section. In the Crime Scene section, Forensic Specialists work with police investigators at major crime scenes, where they are responsible for locating, documenting, and collecting physical evidence. Forensic Specialists also process evidence submitted to the crime lab with requests for various forensic examinations including fingerprinting, high detail photography, and follow-up trace evidence searches.
In the Latent Print section, Latent Print Examiners use the latest technology, including computerized fingerprint identification systems and microscopes, to examine latent finger and palm print evidence collected from crime scenes. Examiners assist during case investigations by providing detectives with possible suspect information developed from automated latent print searches against county, state, and federal finger and palm print databases. The prints identified by Latent Print Examiners often lead to the arrest and conviction of criminals.

Evidence Control is responsible for receiving, storing and legally disposing of thousands of items of property and evidence that is impounded each year by Chula Vista Police Officers, Forensic Specialists, and Community Service Officers.
Digital Evidence Unit (DEU)

The Digital Evidence Unit obtains, analyzes, and manages all digital evidence including personal computer/device data, service provider data, body worn camera video, 911 audio, and police radio traffic recordings. Their responsibilities include protecting the privacy of the individual and community while lawfully obtaining data necessary for criminal prosecution. All activity is compliant with the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA).
