K9 PatchThe Chula Vista Police Department K-9 unit was founded in 1977 within the department’s Patrol Division. The primary function of the K-9 (police dog) is to help police officers find and arrest dangerous wanted offenders while keeping the officers and community safe. This is possible because each police dog has an incredible sense of smell. The dog can follow the scent of an offender and as a result, they are able to help police officers make an arrest. Police dogs help keep people safe in some of the most extreme types of emergency circumstances. These highly trained animals can help reduce risks to police officers while, wherever practical, reducing the use of deadly force to apprehend an offender. Many police dogs are also trained in other areas such as finding illegal drugs and locating weapons or other missing items that were left behind at crime scenes.

The bond between a police officer and a canine partner is unique. But our canine companions are also beloved by the public. These very special dogs often participate in our community by performing educational seminars and demonstrations at our local schools, special events, safety fairs, and other community meetings. The K-9 unit is thankful for the support it receives from the community and is dedicated to enhancing community policing and public safety for Chula Vista residents, business and visitors.
