Extended Water and Wastewater Arrearage Program

As part of the state of California’s efforts to help Californian’s from COVID-19 related financial hardships, the State Water Resources Control Board is helping wastewater agencies, such as the City of Chula Vista’s Sewer Billing Department, recover debt from customers who could not pay their wastewater service bills.

The state originally deployed this program back in 2021, covering wastewater arrearages incurred through June 15, 2021. Now, due to recent additional allocation of $600 million in federal funding for this program, the Extended Water and Wastewater Arrearage Program extends the COVID-19 pandemic relief period from June 15, 2021 through December 31, 20222. Funding is provided using Federal American Rescue Plan Act funds for customer assistance.

What this means for many City of Chula Vista sewer customers is additional relief in past due bills for sewer service charges and late fees. Sewer customers receiving these credits will soon be sent direct notification and accounts will reflect and updated balances.
